The cluster of tiny islands
lying between Ikaria, Samos and Patmos are collectively known as the
Fourni
islands. Here, the landscape is less like nearby Samos and more like the
traditional landscape of the Cyclades islands. Fourni has been inhabited
since ancient times and in the Byzantine period it was a heaven for pirates.
Blessed with secluded coves and quiet beaches, the islands attract visitors
seeking relaxation. The main island has two villages - Kambos, the harbour
and Chryssomilia, which are linked by road. There is, a regular boat
connection between these small traditional fishing islands. Daily ferryboats
as well as hydrofoil ('flying dolphin') connect Fourni with Piraeus, Samos,
Ikaria and most of the Dodecanese islands. |
