Grevena this
well-forested region on the slopes of the verdant Pindos mountains strewn
with charming hamlets is the ideal destination for travelers enjoying peace,
fresh mountain air, climbing, ski, river fishing and hunting. This is the
where Valia Calda, the National Park of Pindos is located a valuable
habitat for the brown bear and one of the most important national parks in
Greece featuring impressive views, lush vegetation, large waterfalls and
small rivers with a lot of water and strong currents.
Visitors are captivated by the
areas natural beauty. In older days, Grevena was a transportation junction
between Macedonia, northwestern Thessaly and Epirus, as evidenced by the
stone bridges that have survive, with the most impressive being the Aziz Aga
bridge, known for its high arch, the highest in Greece.
Built at 543 metres above
sea-level on the banks of Grevenitis river, the namesake capital is a modern
city with restaurants, tavernas, a cinema and an open-air theatre, cool
climate and an ideal starting point for short escapades in the region.
At an altitude of 900 metres --
23 kilometres out of capital Grevena at the village of Zakas is the cave
of Mt. Orliakas, while a second cave is located at the nearby village of
Spilaio (cave) hanging onto a cliff. Also well-worth a visit are the
Byzantine monastery of the Virgin Evangelistria at Paliouria and the
monastery of Zavorda on Mt. Kallistraton founded by Hossios Nikanor in the
16th century. Samarina, another charming village is built on the slopes of
Mt. Smolikas at 1,450 metres above sea level, featuring lush greenery and
spectacular scenery. Other villages that deserve a stop all of them
overlooking fir, pine and willow forests are Kipourio, Krania, Deskati,
Avdela, Polineri, Smixi and Alatopetra.
At the Neolithic Settlement at Knide
excavations have brought to light the remains of a mattle-and-daub
structure, along with pottery and a quantify of small objects.
The prefectures economy relies
on farming, agriculture, ecotourism, forest industry and the ski-resort of
Vasilitsa -- a popular destination for winter holidays while the majority
of the population is engaged in agriculture and stock breeding. |
