Komotini is located at 790km
from Athens and 280km from Thessaloniki. The city is connected to a great
number of domestic estinations by the State railway network, while air-travel is facilitated
through the airports of Kavala and
Alexandroupolis. Regular bus-routes connect Komotini with Athens,
Thessaloniki, Xanthi, Kavala, Drama and Alexandroupolis.
Sea-travel is serviced through the ports of Alexandroupolis, Kavala and
Proto-Lagos. Komotini is ideal for urban tourism, an
excellent starting point for very attractive and interesting short trips to
the surrounding countryside.
Komotini has three museums well worth a visit. The Archaeological Museum
housing finds from the entire region of Thrace, the
Popular Museum and the Ecclesiastical Museum. The sections of the Byzantine
walls in the centre of the city attract much
interest, as well as the peculiar Church of Panagia (Cathedral), the Ottoman
Temples, the building of the Ecclesiastical
Museum and the artisan shops of the historic fabric of the city. |
