Lemnos: Handsome
old houses and mansions^ narrow paved streets, attractive taverns, fish in
abundance, choice local wine. hospitable people are typical features of the
volcanic Island of Lemnos, which is located between Mt, Athos and the
islands of Samothrace, Imvros and Lesvos. Homer relates that its first
inhabitants were the "wild-voiced" Sintians, whom Hephaistos -god of fire
and protector of Lemnos- taught the art of working iron, an art that the
Lemnians still practice today. The island's capital, beautiful Myrina, is
dominated by an imposing castle, once a stronghold for locals and foreigners,
and now a refuge for deer. |
