The prefecture of Magnesia
occupies the east side of Thessaly, encompassing the peninsula of the same
name that ends in cape Trikeri and encloses the Pagasitikos Gulf in its
embrace. Among the fairest regions in Greece, Magnesia, crowned by striking
Mt. Pelion, probably owes its name to the Magnetes tribes that inhabited the
area in prehistoric times.
The prefecture each year is
attracting a rapidly increasing number of tourists, whose needs are met by
an updated, well-developed infrastructure. The multitude of archaeological
sites, the charming beaches, the hospitality of the locals and above all
ravishing Mount Pelion with its picturesque villages literally engraved on
its slopes, guarantee unforgettable vacations.
Volos (326 km. from Athens, 215
km. from Thessaloniki) is the capital and economic centre of the prefecture.
Thanks to its privileged position at the foot of Mt. Pelion on the
Pagasitikos Gulf, it is used as a base for the visitors to its coastal areas,
wooded slopes and green valleys. It was from here, the site of legendary
Iolkos, that Argo set off with Jason and the Argonauts for the distant
shores of the Black Sea in quest of the Golden Fleece. Founded in the mid
19th century, modern Volos, with 71.000 inhabitants, is a cheerful, lively
town, soundly laid out with pleasant broad streets. The waterfront is an
ideal spot for a stroll. A modern coastal avenue bustling with life, it is
lined with pastry shops, cafes and restaurants. From the suburb of Ano Volos,
built up the slopes of Pelion, the Pagasitikos Gulf and the town below take
on another dimension. Volos harbour is particularly active. It is the main
export centre of Thessaly and the scene of much commercial and passenger
traffic bound for the Sporades islands and the great ports of the
Mediterranean.
Pine trees, oaks, firs, wild
olive trees, chestnut trees and a myriad of shrubs and plants, most of them
with therapeutic properties, cover the mountains of Magnesia. Modern hotels
and guesthouses, renovated traditional houses and well-equipped camping
grounds are available throughout the area providing for a relaxed and
enjoyable stay in one of Greeces most picturesque environments.
The prefecture has a very good
road system, rail network and boat connections that link it with the rest of
Greece. |
