A traditional picturesque town
, located in Viotia high up on the slopes of Mount Parnassos,
Arahova
has much to offer its visitors. Built at an altitude of 960 metres, it is an
especially charming town with little alleys and lovely stone houses clinging
to the steep mountain. This quaint town has become a modern ski resort with
the latest winter sports equipment available for sale or rent.
Arahova is also famous for its
hand-woven fabrics. A plethora of stores sell local handcrafts and the
famous "flokati" rugs. The town's numerous tavernas serve local delicacies,
fine wine and unique cheeses. A very special event in the spring is the
celebration in honour of St. George--Arahova's patron saint. It begins on
the eve of April 22 and lasts for three days. It includes a race for old men
dressed in local costume followed by music, dancing and feasting on roast
lamb.

The area surrounding Arahova
presents great natural interest, ideal for long walks in winter peace along
the stunning fields on the slopes of Mt. Parnassos, as well as in the spring
when snow melts revealing nature's beauty in full splendour.
Just 10 kilometres east of
Arahova, at Distomo, a town with important archaeological finds and an
interesting museum, one comes to the Byzantine monastery of Ossios Loukas,
whose 11th century mosaics and frescoes are among the finest in Greece.
Skiing winters in Greece are
closely connected to Arahova. The modern installations at the Parnassos ski
centre in Kellaria and Fterolaka rate among the best in Europe. There is
also a refuge for mountain climbers at Gerondovrado.
Attracting its own share of
visitors in the area is also the Korykeion Andron (also called Sarantavli)
10 kilometres west of Arahova, with a beautiful cave crammed with
stalactites and stalagmites. |
